The Legacy of Latur Samachar: A Beacon of Freedom and Journalism

Latur Samachar holds the distinction of being the first newspaper from the erstwhile Osmanabad (now Dharashiv) district. At the time, Latur was part of Osmanabad, and all legal and administrative processes were conducted through Dharashiv. The foundation of Latur Samachar was laid by freedom fighter Shankar Madhavrao Jade, emerged out of a sense of national inspiration and commitment to public awareness.

Shankar Madhavrao Jade, who was also Latur's first newspaper agent, managed agencies for various newspapers during the Nizam's oppressive rule over Marathwada. At the time, Arya Samaj was the sole organization actively opposing the Nizam, and newspapers served as a vital medium for creating awareness and mobilizing resistance. Due to strict censorship and the fear of persecution, news had to be sent to Solapur or Pune-Mumbai newspapers under the guise of origin from Barshi or Solapur.

The process of disseminating news was fraught with challenges. News packets were handed over to railway passengers traveling via the Barshi Light Narrow Gauge Railway, with requests to drop them into postal boxes at Barshi or subsequent stations. Despite these efforts, delays in publishing news often hindered timely public awareness. Moreover, Shankar Madhavrao Jade frequently faced harassment from the Nizam's police and Razakars for his involvement in anti-Nizam reporting.

Realizing the need for an independent voice, Jade decided to establish a newspaper of his own, and thus, Latur Samachar was born. However, starting a printing press required the Nizam's approval, which was repeatedly denied. Despite these setbacks, Jade continued his efforts to report and publish news. Following the Police Action of 1948, Marathwada was liberated from the Nizam's rule. Soon after, the Osmanabad Collector granted permission for the press on a nominal bond paper, paving the way for Latur Samachar's regular publication.

Latur Samachar became the first regularly published newspaper in Osmanabad and Latur districts. Today, it is proudly run by the third generation of the Jade family, continuing the legacy of national values and journalistic integrity set by its founder. Over the years, the newspaper has faced numerous challenges, including financial crises and external pressures, yet it has remained steadfast in its mission.

So, we pay our humble tribute to the late Shankar Madhavrao Jade, freedom fighter and founding editor of Latur Samachar. His ideals, principles, and vision for a better society continue to inspire us. The legacy of Latur Samachar stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who fought for freedom and truth.

May the blessings of its well-wishers and supporters guide the path of Latur Samachar as it continues to serve as a beacon of inspiration and a voice for the people of Latur and Dharashiv.
